180 Radio: The Future of Radio

180 Radio: The Future of Radio is Here! | OUR NOURISHING ROOTS180 Radio is the most fun I have had listening to podcasts in years!  180 Radio is out-of-the-box internet radio featuring exclusive musical performances, talk shows on health, education, parenting, economics, and tons more.  And have I mentioned that it’s very, very entertaining?

Let me put it this way: you know all those controversial health ideas I talk about all the time?  Like how you should sleep instead of go to the gym, or drink less water to facilitate heat, or that sugar isn’t the devil, or that widespread celiac disease is bunk?

Those kinds of ideas germinate in the rich soil of rigorous study-reading, spirited debates, and getting your brain working with interesting questions!  And 180 Radio is the place where that happens.  Take note!  This is worth it!

CLICK HERE to start listening now.

I love the variety that is inherent in the 180 Radio lineup.  It’s truly cutting edge, where ideas are born and nourished to health in a 100% advertisement-free environment.  You gotta love no commercials! [Read more…]

The Headache Cure: Essential Oils (Part Two)

The Headache Cure: Essential Oils | OUR NOURISHING ROOTS #essentialoils #headache #naturalcure #headachecure #DIYHeadaches can present in a kaleidoscope of ways, and the underlying causes can be even more numerous.  There are cluster headaches, tension headaches, migraines, and more, not to mention more rare forms like chronic or exercise headaches, plus secondary headaches that branch out from an underlying condition like an infection, or panic attacks (source). But the variety of possible types and causes can be boiled down to one common root: headaches are painful.

And depending on the type of headache and the underlying cause, you can sometimes find relief with the simplest of natural remedies before you ever have to reach for a bottle of acetaminophen or make a doctor’s appointment. Why go through all that trouble when a simple pinch of salt, capsule of probiotics, or a few drops of essential oil will do the trick?  My philosophy is that when faced with an ailment, natural remedies should be the first course of action to consider.

Solet’s look at all the possible natural remedies in five parts!  Today’s topic: Essential oils.  We will also discuss minerals, body tension release, pain relief, and digestion. [Read more…]

9 Months In: LOVE YOUR BODY!!!

9 Months In: KEEP GOING!! | OUR NOURISHING ROOTS

Can you lose weight while remaining body positive?  You can see my original post here, my 30 day update here,  my 60 day update here, and my 120 day update here.

UPDATE: I highly recommend reading ALL the books found here, which are from sources that I trust to also remain free of dieting dogma.  They are the real truth-tellers when it comes to healthy weight loss and healthy relationships to food and exercise.  If you want to change your life, this is where you should start.

Well, it’s been about 6 months since I checked in with y’all, and we even already made it through the Anti-Diet Challenge of 2014, wherein I rant about why I think the diet industry is basically evil.

Spoiler Alert!: This year my Anti-Diet Challenge isn’t limited just to January when I get real tired of hearing about everyone’s new year’s resolutions to redouble their efforts to nurture their eating disorders.

So let’s check in.  Here’s what I said in my last update:

Sometimes life happens and you don’t do things perfectly.  And then you have a choice: give up or keep going.  I choose to keep going. Things can fall apart.  Things can change.  And they do! Maybe you get thrown a curveball and you are thinking “Wow! I didn’t see that coming!”  Or maybe you did see it coming, and now it’s here. Life is about being accountable for yourself.  It’s about owning up to reality.  Who you are.  What actions you choose to take.  It’s basically about owning you, no matter what. And the same goes for me.  So I am choosing to keep going.  I choose not to give up.

Here’s the weight update: [Read more…]

Anti-Diet Challenge, Day 13: Parmesan Potato Rounds

Parmesan Potato Rounds | OUR NOURISHING ROOTS

The Anti-Diet Challenge 2014 forges ahead.  We don’t do kale chips or cleanses.  We don’t do body shaming comparisons to celebrities or other, skinnier friends.  We don’t vilify certain foods, like carbs and/or gluten and/or grains, and blame them for all our woes.

We just learn to love our bodies, to eat more to feel more energy and even to get slimmer (yes, you read that right), and to let go of all the rhetoric about how our bodies aren’t enough, that we don’t deserve to take up space, that we should look a certain way, that certain foods are bad and others are good, and that food is something to be feared and used as an emotional weapon.  Enough is enough.

Reject diets.  They are part of disordered eating.  The cycle of calorie restriction, losing weight, returning to normal caloric levels, gaining weight back, rinse, repeat: this is madness.

Instead, eat more potatoes.  They make your body warm, they benefit your metabolism, and these particular potatoes are loaded with grass-fed cheese and butter, unrefined salt and organic spices, and just make you feel good! [Read more…]

Anti-Diet Challenge 2014

I have something to say!

You aren’t a bad person for eating ice cream.  And you aren’t a good person for eating kale.  And if you’re rolling your eyes saying that it’s not about good and bad, but simply about health, I’ll even go this far.  You aren’t unhealthy for eating ice cream.  And you aren’t healthy for eating kale.

Last year I started a tradition during the new year.  I call it the Anti-Diet Challenge.  And this year is no exception!

Yep.

No diets.  No body-shaming.  No worrying about detoxing.  No fretting about 5 “holiday pounds”.  No buying into the idea that I am not enough, until I fit a certain body mold. [Read more…]

Elderberry Syrup with Hibiscus and Royal Camu for Immunity

Elderberry Syrup with Hibiscus and Royal Camu | OUR NOURISHING ROOTS

There’s nothing I love more than knowing enough about essential oils, herbs, tinctures, and homemade medicines to make something with my own two hands to tend to the people I love.  There is something about crafting a tincture, salve, or solution from high-quality natural ingredients that is so satisfying.  When I make my wintertime medicines, this is always first on my list.

I believe it helps me and my family keep our immune systems healthy.  And it doesn’t hurt that it’s delicious on pancakes!   [Read more…]

How to Care for Cast Iron

How to Care For Cast Iron | OUR NOURISHING ROOTS

I love my cast iron skillets!  I got them a few years ago, and by now they are beautifully seasoned and make everything I cook in them taste amazing.  I use them most mornings to fry eggs, and most afternoons to make several variations on grilled cheese sandwiches.  Okay, and I also cook a lot of bacon in them! Was it hard for me at first to get used to cast iron?  Was it hard for me to season them?  No! I get a lot of questions about how to care for cast iron whenever I mention that I use it.  But the truth is that it’s not hard at all.  Or at least, I have not had any problems with mine!  So let me share with you what I do with mine.
