I love honeycrisp apples. That’s how this whole thing started. I went to the store this morning, and there were all these beautiful, crispy, slightly tart and slightly sweet honeycrisp apples, and none of them were organic. Nooo!
Fortunately, I was still able to buy the non-organic honeycrisp apples, because I know that I can take them home and cleanse them with my homemade natural apple cider vinegar produce wash. It helps to remove pesticides, wax, and any other nasties that get added to conventional fruits.
Why do I care? Apples are the most pesticide-laden of the conventional produce sampled by the Environmental Working Group this year. You can see the list of offenders here.
See, for some produce I don’t really mind if they are organically grown. Ideally, I would buy all organic all the time, but sometimes you have to work with what is available, what you can afford in your budget, and just allowing yourself to not be perfect. I mean, really! Who has time for perfection?
So I follow the pesticide guide and weigh my options when I go to the grocery store and see the prices for conventional and organic produce. I always buy organic apples and the other items at the top of the list. Or I make sure to wash them thoroughly with this natural apple cider vinegar produce wash.
Note: Use raw apple cider vinegar like this brand to wash your fruit. I love to buy a large container of this apple cider vinegar, and I use it in all kinds of things, from salad dressing to detox baths to treating heartburn.
- In a large mixing bowl, place the fruit in the bottom and fill with water until the fruit is covered.
- Add a generous splash of apple cider vinegar (maybe up to 1/4 cup) and let sit for 15 minutes, turning the fruit once in a while to get all the outside of the fruit immersed in the solution. Alternately, you can put a glass, stone, or ceramic dinner plate on top of the fruit to keep them submerged.
- After the time is up, simply drain the bowl and rinse the fruit with plain water. Dry, and eat!
